Applying dental sealants to children’s teeth has been shown to reduce the need for
fillings by 72 percent and has been a Delta Dental benefit for children under the
age of 16 for many years. Beginning in 2007, Delta Dental of Idaho extended coverage

While it is important for people with advanced gum disease to receive professional
intervention such as periodontal surgery to slow or reverse the progression of the
disease, it may also leave the affected teeth with exposed root surfaces.
Studies
have shown that people who have had this type of treatment for advanced gum disease
may be at an increased risk for developing cavities on the roots of the teeth. Beginning
in 2007, Delta Dental of Idaho began providing preventive topical fluoride treatment
in conjunction with periodontal maintenance therapy to at-risk individuals
who have had certain periodontal surgeries.
